Sir,
We have the honour to acknowledge receipt of
your letter of the 23rd inst M. and thank the Lords
Commissioners of the Admiralty for their good offices in
requesting the Secretary of State for the Colonies to
instruct the Governor of Hong Kong to release theAmmunition
consigned by us per S.S. "Den of Airlie* to Shanghai for
the Chinese Naval Service.
We regret however to draw your attention to the
fact that as a consequence of the directions that this cargo should be discharged at Hong Kong in lieu of Shanghai, the owners of the "Den of Airlie" have advised us that
their Contract for the shipment of same must be con-
sidered as ended after discharge at Hong Kong. This
will necessarily entail extra expense in forwarding the Ammunition to its destination at Shanghai and we presume
that we shall be in order in looking to His Majesty's Government to recoup us for the additional expense
entailed.
For
We have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your obedient Servants,
SIR W. G. ARMSTRONG, WHITWORTH & CO. LTD.
NBC/H.
The Secretary of the Admiralty,
Admiralty,
Whitehall, S.W.
